Coming into this project we had no idea what to expect, we were full of drive and had an end goal in our sites. After spending long nights with fuzzy eyes glued to the computer screen reading everything we could on start ups, how to run a business, so…many… articles… We were faced with all types of advice a lot of go get ‘em girls! and some you-don’t-know-what-your-getting-yourself-intos.
There is a lot of advice out there but nothing can tell you what your journey will be like. We suggest block out the haters and dive in head first. Who’s knows the direction it will take or the opportunities that will open up to you. Don’t know about you but we’d rather an ‘oh well’ than a ‘what if’. We have put together a few little tips that we think would be helpful no matter what direction your journey goes.
Become and organisational wiz
Look at your to do list and be prepared for it to double, triple, invite all their plus ones and annoying cousins and now your left wondering how the hell your going to deal with all this. Your going to need to take a deep breath or 20 and really hone in on those organisational skills your year 12 teacher went on about all the time. Grab those highlighters, plastic sheets and folders, you’re really going to need it this time. When starting a business you can never think of it all and plan it all out in a nice step by step sequence (if only!). Things are going to pop up out of no where at the last minute and it’s not fair to try and remember it all, write it down and plan it out. You’ll thank yourself later.
Be a knowledge sponge
We have our things and we love our things and sometimes all we want to do is our thing. We sure learnt quick when our accountant was drawing every diagram known to man while we stared at him dazed and confused (bless him for trying, numbers are definitely not our thing). Coming into the biz world you have to learn a lot of things outside your comfort zone. Your thing isn’t just your thing now, when starting a business you’re a book keeper, a manager, a marketer you are god damn superwoman/man! it can all be exciting but at times overwhelming just try to take it all in and make as many notes as you can so you can come back to them once the initial what the hell am I doing feeling has calmed down. We learnt that the hard way.
Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize
When your to do list has come and made a giant mess everywhere what do you do? Prioritize! It’s just a fact that when you start a business your going to be super super time poor, especially in the launch stages. Which isn’t a bad thing! There is going to be a lot to do and it can seem like your constantly chasing your tail. When this happens just chill, sit back and prioritize everything, it will make tackling the mess seem a little easier. You can do this not just with your business but with your life as well when you’ve got everything in order don’t forget to prioritize a little me time to relax and reflect, you don’t want to burn out this early.
Don’t just put a bandaid on it!
If you’re anything like we are you just want to get it started and when things you never thought of keep popping up in your way it’s tempting to just shove it to the back, find a way around it and deal with that later. Please for the love of beautifully planned Instagram feeds do not do this. We know how much you just want to tell the world about your awesome idea and trust me we all want to hear about it but to give you biz baby the best fighting chance you need to build good foundations. The old saying you can’t build a great building on weak foundations really applies here take the time to do it well and do it right the first time and you wont find yourself in world of trouble later on, trust me it’s worth it.
Your not in it alone
When first starting out it can be a crazy, exciting roller coster or ups and downs but when your are in those downs you need to remind yourself that you don’t have to do it all alone. There is a whole world of people out there willing to help you just need to reach out. There is no way one person can know all there is to know about business. There are marketing agencies, accountants, designers and business coaches assemble your dream team that can help you, motivate you and kick some butt!
